What are Grid Slots?

July 31, 2023

Slot games have evolved a lot over the years. Today, players are treated to a whole host of different types, with unique mechanics, entertaining bonus features, and thousands of different paylines. Another of these are “grid slots”, a game with a layout that is very different to a traditional version that has between three and five reels and three or four rows. A grid slot is exactly as its name suggests – a grid. They’re typically bigger than a traditional reel slot, using grids that range from 5×5 up to 6×12, creating much more room for symbols.

Change

Ever since the Liberty Bell, the first-ever slot machine, which was invented in 1894, the reels have spun around to reveal the symbols. Grid slots change this. Instead of spinning, the symbols fall down from the top of the grid, similar to what you’d see in “match three” games.

However, in grid slots, you don’t click on the symbols to move them around. Instead of matching symbols on the same line, you need three or more to be touching. When you match symbols, they disappear from the grid and more take their place by dropping down from above. This keeps happening until there are no more winning combinations and the spin ends.

Grid Slots Bonus Features

Like all other slot games, grid slots are packed with many bonus features, including Wilds and Scatters. They also contain all of the basic elements of a traditional slot but add a unique twist that creates a fun playing experience.

Grid Slots Example

For this, let’s imagine you are playing a 5×3 slot with 25 paylines, and here’s the lay of the land after a spin:

The first row’s second reel slot shows a symbol of a bell.

The same symbol is also on display in the third reel slot of the first row.

And again, the bell icon is also shown in the fourth reel slot of the same line.

If the above occurs, and one of your paylines connects these grid slots, you’d win a payout for four bells in a line.
